Duke confirmed Saturday that quarterback Thomas Sirk suffered a partial tear of his left Achilles tendon and will miss the 2016 season after undergoing surgery.

Reports emerged Friday that Sirk had suffered a setback in his recovery from the injury he originally suffered in February, and later it was suggested the senior re-tore his Achilles.

Sirk threw for 2,625 yards and 16 touchdowns last year, leading Duke to its first bowl victory since 1961. With Sirk out for the season, junior pivot Parker Boehme or redshirt freshman Daniel Jones will take over as the starter.

Duke opens its season Sept. 3 against North Carolina Central.
