Trace McSorley named Penn State's starting QB

Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

Trace McSorley will be Penn State's starting quarterback entering the 2016 season, head coach James Franklin announced Wednesday.

"It was a combination of factors," Franklin said, according to Erin McCarthy of the Philadelphia Inquirer. "It was spring practice, it was the bowl game. It was a difficult decision."

The redshirt sophomore saw action in six games last season, including the Nittany Lions' Taxslayer Bowl loss to Georgia. He finished the campaign with 185 yards passing and two touchdowns.

McSorley beat out redshirt freshman Tommy Stevens for the job. He'll take over for Christian Hackenberg, who left school after his junior season and was selected by the New York Jets in the second round of the draft.

Penn State opens the season at home against Kent State on Sept. 3.
