UCF criticized for honoring O'Leary

Brad Barr-USA TODAY Sports

A report surfaced earlier Tuesday that UCF is planning to honor former coach George O'Leary with an on-campus statue.

While O'Leary's achievements with the program are noteworthy, at least one person isn't too pleased with the school's decision.

Steve Yerrid, a Tampa-based lawyer who represents the family of former Knights player Ereck Plancher who collapsed and died during a practice in 2008, voiced his displeasure upon hearing the news.

"They're going to erect a statue for George O'Leary?" Yerrid asked CBS Sports' Dennis Dodd. "It makes me, if not physically nauseous, but emotionally nauseous."

Plancher's cause of death was complications from sickle cell trait, and the family was awarded a settlement from the university athletic association. Yerrid claims the family has yet to see a dime of the settlement and vowed to continue fighting the school in the matter.

"We will pursue justice until the last ounce of energy we have," he said. "I tell you what, (UCF) can go to hell."

O'Leary is the winningest coach in school history, capturing seven bowl victories in his 12 years at the helm.
