Notre Dame's Redfield arrested on gun, pot charges; 4 others involved

Standout safety Max Redfield was among five Notre Dame players arrested Friday night for possession of marijuana, and one of three also arrested for possession of a handgun without a license.

Redfield, linebacker Te'Von Coney, running back Dexter Williams, cornerback Ashton White, and wide receiver Kevin Stepherson were charged for marijuana, according to Indiana State Police.

Redfield, Williams, and Stepherson each face the additional gun charge. The weapon was found loaded.

All of the charges are misdemeanors, according to ESPN's Matt Fortuna - a potentially significant detail, as a school official said that any felony charge could result in dismissal. The spokesman, vice president for public affairs and communications Paul Browne, added in a statement that the university will determine if the arrested student-athletes will face other sanctions.

The five players were initially pulled over by a state trooper for speeding around 10:07 p.m. Their vehicle was travelling 73 mph in a 60 mph zone, and also had an improper taillight.

Redfield is undoubtedly the most significant name of the five taken into custody. The senior is one of Notre Dame's top defensive players, and accounted for 60 tackles and an interception in 12 games last year. It's not his first time landing in off-field trouble, though, as he was sent home prior to last season's Fiesta Bowl because of an incident away from the field.

Coney, a sophomore, had 13 tackles last year. Williams, also a sophomore, rushed for 81 yards and one touchdown. White didn't record any statistics in his first campaign, and Stepherson is an incoming freshman.

The players were arrested only hours before another teammate, cornerback Devin Butler, was jailed for battery against a police officer and resisting an officer, though the news of Butler's arrest came out first.
