Baylor to discipline Ish Zamora for animal abuse

Baylor wide receiver Ish Zamora will be disciplined for a violent incident involving his pet dog, head coach Jim Grobe said Friday.

Zamora was investigated for animal abuse after a video of him striking the dog with a belt, kicking it, and yelling at it surfaced in June. Grobe did not reveal the specifics of Zamora's punishment, and said the sophomore is still practicing with the team.

"We're not going to tolerate it," Grobe told John Werner of the Waco Tribune-Herald. "He's going to be disciplined by a bunch of people. The city is going to get a piece of him, and the university doesn't take it lightly. There will be some sanctions from the university. From an athletic department standpoint we'll do some things. Hopefully, it's a teaching moment and a learning experience for him."

The incident transpired as Zamora grew frustrated with the dog while attempting to house-train it.

The sophomore recorded nine catches for 132 yards and two touchdowns last season at Baylor. He's expected to start opposite KD Cannon this year, though Grobe indicated his playing time could be slashed because of the episode.

"The thing all of our players understand is there's no guarantee you're going to get on the field just because you're a good player," Grobe said. "Just because you're a good player doesn't mean we're going to overlook bad behavior."

After the incident was investigated, Zamora was charged with a Class C misdemeanor and given a citation for up to $500, according to Noel Smart of KXXV-TV.

The Bears kick off their season Sept. 2 against Northwestern.
