Report: Alabama's Kendall Sheffield to transfer

Spruce Derden-USA TODAY Sports / Reuters

Alabama cornerback Kendall Sheffield, a former five-star recruit, is transferring out of the program, a family member told Gerry Hamilton of ESPN.

The family member said Sheffield has been granted a conditional release that allows him to find a new home at any school outside the SEC.

Sheffield came to the Crimson Tide in 2015 as the No. 3-ranked cornerback recruit in the nation. However, his tenure with the program comes to an end without any impact, as Sheffield redshirted his freshman season and will leave before his second campaign.

Head coach Nick Saban acknowledged Tuesday that Sheffield was absent from the team, and said he wasn't sure when - or if - he'd return.

Sheffield's departure from Alabama comes on the heels of fellow cornerback Maurice Smith's transfer to Georgia. Smith's move to Athens became a highly-publicized story after Alabama attempted to block the in-conference transfer.
