Baylor will be entering a season of recovery and rebuilding without one of its projected starting defensive tackles.

Senior Byron Bonds has yet to participate during preseason camp due to a knee injury, and a return in 2016 is anything but guaranteed, according to John Werner of The Waco Tribune.

"If he came back after three or four games or midseason and we needed him that would be great," head coach Jim Grobe said. "I think the way we're looking at it is we have to prepare to go without him. But I feel really good about our front right now. I think we're in good shape."

The pending loss of Bonds comes coupled with the recent loss of running back Johnny Jefferson as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident. Grobe said Monday that he believes Jefferson will be out "a while."

Bonds has played in 33 career games for Baylor, eight of which have been starts.
