Oklahoma State wide receiver Marcell Ateman, who broke out as a junior to establish himself as a primary receiving option for the Cowboys, will begin the 2016 season on the shelf.

The senior suffered a broken bone in his foot during non-contact summer drills and underwent surgery to repair the damage, according to John Helsley of The Oklahoman.

Cowboy's receivers coach Kasey Dunn downplayed the long-term severity of the injury, but showed disappointment for Ateman and the progress he's made on the field.

"I don't know where that's going to be," Dunn said in regards to Ateman's return date. "I'm hoping as soon as possible. He's had a great summer. I don't think it's that big of a deal. I think he'll be back probably sooner than later.

"I'm bummed though, because it's a little bit of a setback for him. His play was going up, up, up. And it all started about Game 6 or 7 last year, where he really started to climb. Played well against Baylor. Played really well against Ole Miss. Had a great offseason. Summer was killer. And then he gets nicked."

Ateman's junior season was a coming out party, as he appeared in all 13 games, starting all but one, and hauled in 45 catches for 766 yards and five touchdowns.
