Father of injured LSU kicker says fire saved his son's life

Fire is a dangerous entity that is inherently destructive, but Dwayne Delahoussaye credits the growing blaze inside the car wreckage that killed both Sam Foltz and Mike Sadler for saving his son's life.

Colby Delahoussaye, a placekicker for LSU, was knocked unconscious after the car carrying him and the two punters swerved off the road and struck a tree. Delahoussaye was only awakened by a growing sensation of pain as fire began to consume his legs.

Dwayne Delahoussaye confirmed the role fire played in his son's survival to Ross Dellenger of The Advocate.

"All he remembers is that the fire was burning his leg and that woke him up," the elder Delahoussaye said. "He was knocked unconscious. The burning sensation revived him. That's all he remembers. He doesn't even know how he got out. He doesn't know where he crawled out of."

Somehow, Colby was able to call 911 after he emerged from the wreckage, despite his cellphone being shattered.

Despite his injuries and the pain of his burns and bruises, Colby was able to meet with Karen Sadler, the mother of former Michigan State punter Mike Sadler who was driving the car when the accident occured.

"She was able to visit with Colby and get closure," Dwayne said. "It was a tough thing. She was trying to put all of the pieces together."

"Her and Colby sat in the backseat. She gave us both a big hug before she left," he added, recounting the discussion held during a car ride to the Milwaukee airport. "I can't even begin to imagine...I'm bringing my son home. She's not."
