Baylor's Grobe took job to help coaching staff get 'back on track'

Many wondered why Jim Grobe would want to take over a program with as much turmoil as Baylor. Well, it turns out the answer was very simple: he wanted to help.

"I'm not trying to come in here and make a career move," Grobe said at Big 12 media day. "I'm here to help. I'm here to help the players first and foremost and secondly, help this coaching staff get back on track."

The 64-year-old hasn't been on the sidelines since he left Wake Forest in 2013, so it's not surprising many are questioning Grobe's motivation to return to coaching when most at his age are easing into retirement.

It certainly seems like Grobe wants to keep the football structure of the Bears the same, and avoid the spotlight.

"I think now that they understand I'm fully here to help them and I think our coaches understand the same thing," Grobe added. "I've never been a head coach that's lost the perspective of being an assistant coach. I've always wanted to be an assistant coach to this very day. I would like to make all the decisions that head coaches make but coach the linebackers and have nobody know I'm the head coach."
