The NCAA Division I Council adjusted its bowl selection process Wednesday, ruling that all bowl-eligible teams with 6-6 records must be chosen before any 5-7 teams can be considered.

After all bowl-eligible teams have been selected, the Council will deem 5-7 teams eligible for postseason play in descending order "from the highest multiyear Academic Progress Rate in the Football Bowl Subdivision for the most recent reporting year."

"It's impossible to project how many eligible bowl teams we will have," Bob Bowlsby, chairman of the football oversight committee said in a release. "We think we have a selection process in the postseason that makes sense and is fair to the schools and the bowls."

With only 77 teams reaching the 6-6 threshold last season, Nebraska, San Jose State, and Minnesota qualified for bowl play with 5-7 records.

The new process will be implemented prior to the 2016-17 bowl season.
