Notre Dame to award No.1 jersey throughout the season

Most programs, like Ohio State and Michigan have a merit system where players receive helmet decals to reward players for having a good game.

Notre Dame isn't going to touch one of the most famous helmets in college football, instead they'll take care of another issue while rewarding a players performance.

For many years wearing the No. 3 jersey for the Fighting Irish was the most sought after number. Now, it seems like all single digit numbers, especially the No.1 jersey is of high demand in South Bend.

Instead of giving it to a senior player or one of the best players, head coach Brian Kelly is doing things a little differently this season, giving No. 1 each week to a different player.

“That’s going to be the player who exemplifies himself both on and off the field in a manner that represents all the things we want a Notre Dame football player to represent,” Kelly said on WSBT's SportsBeat.

“And he will wear that No. 1, because it signifies that he’s the best.”

The other single digit numbers will be awarded based upon a points system designed by the coaches.
