Big 12 changes mind, Baker Mayfield given extra year of eligibility

Mark D. Smith-USA TODAY Sports

After a 24-hour media storm condemning the denial of Baker Mayfield's extra year of eligibility, the Big 12 conference changed its mind Thursday and granted the Oklahoma quarterback's request.

The decision passed by a 7-3 vote, meaning two members changed their vote from Wednesday's 5-5 mark. With the rule change, Mayfield will now have two seasons of eligibility remaining with the Sooners instead of just one.

The request was over Mayfield losing a year of eligibility during his transfer from Texas Tech to Oklahoma following the 2013 season. With Thursday's ruling, walk-on players wanting to transfer within the conference can still receive financial aid from their original school.

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops, who was staunch in his disapproval of the initial ruling, applauded the change from the Big 12 reps.

"I appreciate the Big 12 faculty athletics representatives spending more time studying the important issue of walk-on transfers and am pleased by the result of today's Big 12 vote," the long-time Sooners coach said in a statement. "Not just because it potentially impacts Baker Mayfield, but because it was the right thing to do."

The standout pivot was certainly excited by the news, taking to Twitter to remind opposing fans:

Oklahoma opens the season Sept. 3 against Houston.
