Baker Mayfield denied extra year of eligibility by Big 12

Oklahoma was hit with some bad news Wednesday, as faculty reps from the conference voted against giving Sooners star Baker Mayfield an extra year of eligibility Wednesday.

Mayfield, who transferred from Texas Tech, was hoping to have a year of eligibility restored since he made the move to Oklahoma as a non-scholarship player. The vote failed by lack of majority, as the reps were split on the matter 5-5.

The decision means 2016 will be Mayfield's final season in the Big 12, but he could be eligible for a graduate transfer in 2017. While the news stings Oklahoma, it will likely lead to a celebration by opposing defensive coordinators. The 6-foot-2, 214-pound Texan was one of the top pivots in the country last season, throwing for 3,700 yards and 36 touchdowns, while also adding seven scores on the ground.

While losing Mayfield after next season will hurt Bob Stoops' program, they brought in former five-star quarterback Kyler Murray on a transfer from Texas A&M in the offseason, and he'll be eligible for the 2017 season.
