Baylor 'will not respond' to reports of president Ken Starr's dismissal

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

Baylor isn't quite ready to say goodbye to president Ken Starr.

The university released a statement Tuesday after reports emerged that the board of regents had made the decision to let go the embattled president in the wake of a series of sexual assault scandals that have rocked the school.

The Baylor Board of Regents continues its work to review the findings of the Pepper Hamilton investigation and we anticipate further communication will come after the Board completes its deliberations. We will not respond to rumors, speculation or reports based on unnamed sources, but when official news is available, the University will provide it. We expect an announcement by June 3.

While the statement appears to convey that Starr hasn't yet been fired, it doesn't preclude that from occurring once the board's review of the investigation is complete. Baylor hired the Law Firm of Pepper Hamilton to conduct the investigation into the handling of multiple cases of rape and assault accusations by the university against members of its football team.

Scout's Chip Brown reported earlier Tuesday that Baylor would fire Starr before the end of the month, only to update that story to report the board of regents had decided Tuesday to remove Starr as president.

According to the report, the dismissal of Starr would serve as the key component to Baylor's response to the scandal, and Art Briles would remain head coach of the Bears.
