West Virginia's Holgorsen anticipates Grier being eligible to start 2017

Will Grier must sit out the 2016 season to satisfy NCAA transfer rules, plus the six weeks remaining on his one-year drug suspension, but it appears the latter could be wiped out.

In a statement Friday, West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen said he "fully anticipates" the quarterback being ruled eligible to play Week 1 of the 2017 campaign.

"Will Grier enrolled for classes here at WVU on May 16," his statement reads. "With the timing of his transfer, and the requirements that he has to finish from the NCAA, I cannot officially confirm his eligibility until the summer of 2017. However, I fully anticipate him being eligible for the opening game of the 2017 season."

Grier transferred to West Virginia from Florida at the beginning of April. He was on the cusp of stardom with Florida after leading the Gators to a perfect 6-0 record to start the 2015 season, while putting up 1,204 yards and 10 touchdowns.

However, the freshman was suspended in mid-October following his positive drug test. Grier unsuccessfully appealed the ban, and later elected to transfer out of the program.

While it's a long way away, West Virginia is scheduled to open the 2017 season against Virginia Tech.
