Virginia Tech PG Devin Wilson to also play football

Virginia Tech's Devin Wilson will be a two-sport athlete in 2016-17, as the point guard will also play receiver on the football team.

"Devin is a terrific athlete who really wants to compete for both programs," new football coach Justin Fuente said in a statement Thursday. "Coach (Buzz) Williams and I both believe that Devin can balance his academic workload with the demands of both sports. We're anxious to see Devin continue to develop his skills at receiver and are hopeful he can help us this season before returning to the basketball court."

Wilson saw his role reduced last season on the hardcourt, his minutes per game dropping from 30 to 21.5. The cut in playing time also led to a decrease in stats, as he dropped from 6.5 points and 4.2 assists per contest to just 2.1 points and 2.2 assists.

The school also announced it would transfer his scholarship from the basketball program to the football team, giving Williams the opportunity to bring in another player.

The 6-foot-4, 190-pound Wilson last played football for Montour High School in Pennsylvania, catching 230 passes for 3,200 yards and 41 touchdowns.
