Former Notre Dame running back and current UAB enrollee Greg Bryant is in critical condition after being shot Friday night in Florida while driving on the I-95.

Bryant and his passenger, 25-year-old Maurice Glover, were taken to hospital. Glover's injuries are minor, while Bryant is fighting for his life.

"The UAB Football Family's prayers are with Greg Bryant and his family this morning," said Blazers head coach Bill Clark, who confirmed the incident. "He was injured in a shooting last night in Miami and is receiving medical care, surrounded by his family. We are working to get more information and to support Greg and his family in this difficult time."

UAB released a statement with incorrect information that claimed Bryant had died, but later updated it to indicate Bryant was still alive and in critical condition.

"We understand that our running back, Greg Bryant, is still fighting for his life in a Florida hospital following injuries he sustained in a shooting earlier today," Clark said. "The condolences we expressed earlier were based on information a family member at the hospital provided and gave us permission to release. We remain steadfast as a Blazer family in our prayers and support for Greg and his family at this difficult time."

Bryant began his career at Notre Dame and spent the 2013 and 2014 seasons with the Irish. He eventually transferred to a junior college, and then to UAB, whose football team is slated to return in 2017 after financial issues forced a temporary shutdown of the program.

Bryant played in 15 games for the Irish, racking up 303 yards and three touchdowns on 57 carries.
