Spring Game Roundup: Ohio State sets record, Notre Dame QBs battle

Twitter/@amber_rollins

Saturday was one of the busiest days of the year in college football, with nearly half of FBS teams taking to the field for their spring games. It was a chance to get a first look at some of the top programs in the nation, and start to get an idea of what to expect from the 2016 season.

Here's a look at some of Saturday's most high-profile spring games:

Ohio State - Gray 28, Scarlet 17

The Buckeyes set a national record with 100,189 fans in attendance at their spring game. Those on hand got to see Joe Burrow emerge as J.T. Barrett's potential backup at quarterback, as well as a sweet one-handed interception by Jerome Baker.

Boston College - Maroon 6, White 2

Boston College struggled to score all season long in 2015, so it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that that trend continued in the 2016 spring game. Looking on the bright side, however, the eight points the Eagles put up Saturday either equaled or bettered their point totals from four games this past season.

Tennessee - Orange 70, White 63

On the opposite end of the spectrum is Tennessee, though the high score is a result of a non-traditional scoring system. Their are high hopes for the Volunteers this season, and Joshua Dobbs did nothing to dissuade them, completing 5-of-9 passes for 166 yards.

Miami - Green 24, Orange 7

Mark Richt got to see a lot of his new quarterback during his first spring practice as Hurricanes head coach. Brad Kaaya got plenty of work in, going 29-of-49 for 345 yards with three touchdowns and an interception.

Notre Dame - Blue 17, Gold 10

The quarterback battle at Notre Dame continued to heat up, with DeShone Kizer getting the better of Malik Zaire. Kizer was 10-of-17 for 113 yards, while Zaire completed 6 of his 15 pass attempts for 120 yards. Despite his inconsistency, Zaire had a couple of standout moments, including a TD run and this sweet hookup with Torii Hunter Jr.

Texas - Texas 21, Horns 7

Charlie Strong may have found his new quarterback. True freshman Shane Buechele was impressive, passing for 229 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while senior Tyrone Swoopes was picked off twice, and Jerrod Heard didn't play because of a shoulder injury. Strong probably would have liked to have seen more, but the game was cut short due to rain.

Alabama - Crimson 7, White 3

It wasn't much of a shocker to see Alabama's defense dominate. Neither team scored until the fourth quarter, in part because of four missed field goals by Adam Griffith. Damien Harris rushed for 114 yards as he battles Bo Scarbrough to replace departed Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry.

Georgia - Black 34, Red 14

Let the hype begin. True freshman phenom Jacob Eason left his mark on Georgia's spring game, passing for 218 yards and a score as he looks to take the starting job from day one.

LSU - Purple 17, White 7

Remember Leonard Fournette straight up running over defenders last season? Well, even his LSU teammates feel the pain when trying to take down Mr. Fournette.

Pittsburgh - Blue 19, Gold 17

Quadree Henderson didn't have a busy day, but it sure was productive. The sophomore receiver had 107 rushing yards on just four attempts, including a 64-yard touchdown on an end-around pitch.

Louisville - Red 73, White 7

Lamar Jackson wishes the season could start right now. The Louisville quarterback threw for 519 yards and eight touchdowns, including seven in the first half. Jackson had four touchdown passes of at least 44 yards, with this 85-yard bomb to James Quick the longest of the bunch.
