West Virginia receives notice of allegations from NCAA
Morgantown, WV (Sports Network) - West Virginia athletic director Oliver Luck issued a statement on Thursday after receiving a notice of allegations from the NCAA for possible rules violations in the Mountaineers football program.
Though Luck did not delve into details of the ongoing inquiry, he did say "the allegations focus primarily on the activities and roles of graduate assistants, student managers and other non-coaching staff in the football program -- from 2005 to 2009."
Luck also indicated the program has already undergone changes, including: reducing the number of football graduate assistant positions, restricting the duties of graduate assistants and non-coaching personnel, and restructuring the student manager program.
"I have spoken at length to [head football] coach Bill Stewart and his staff and I am convinced that they believe in operating a fully-compliant football program," Luck said. "Coach Stewart and his coaches have my full support, the full support of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and the full support of the University."
WVU, according to Luck, fully cooperated in the nine-month investigation, which conducted interviews with 80 people in the program.
Stewart took over the program following the 2008 regular season, as Rich Rodriguez abruptly left his alma mater to become head coach at Michigan, where Rodriguez has also been under investigation for several rules violations.
