Athletics' Doolittle undergoing MRI for intercostal injury

The Oakland Athletics are playing it safe with closer Sean Doolittle after he felt a cramp-like pain in his right side following Saturday's game.

The injury means Doolittle won't be available for duty Sunday night vs. the Los Angeles Angels and perhaps even longer. Manager Bob Melvin announced his plan for high-leverage situations moving forward without the lefty.

Doolittle has been a rock for the A's to this point, converting 20 of his 23 save opportunities.

Athletics reinstate Sean Doolittle from 15-day DL

The Oakland Athletics will have their closer back in uniform for a pivotal weekend series against the Seattle Mariners, as the club activated left-hander Sean Doolittle from the 15-day disabled list Friday.

Doolittle missed nearly three weeks with an intercostal strain, but declared himself "ready" after throwing a 40-pitch bullpen session Wednesday.

The 27-year-old boasts a career-best 2.28 ERA with 20 saves and a superb 16:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio through 54 appearances this season, and earned his first career All-Star berth back in July.

Athletics closer Sean Doolittle expected to rejoin team Friday

The Oakland Athletics are hoping their ninth-inning stopper can help put an end to the club's recent struggles on the eve of a pivotal three-game set in Seattle.

Athletics manager Bob Melvin said Thursday he expects left-hander Sean Doolittle to come off the disabled list in time for Friday's series opener.

"It makes our bullpen so much better,” Melvin told Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. “It really can be significant with one guy out."

Doolittle, sidelined since Aug. 24 with a right intercostal strain, has been a big part of the Athletics' success this season. The A's reliever has the top strikeout-to-walk ratio and WHIP among major-league closers, issuing just five free passes all year, and only one since July 26.

The Athletics, who were tied with the Los Angeles Angels at the time Doolittle suffered the injury, have struggled in his absence, losing 12 of 17 to fall nine games back of the American League West division lead.

Oakland enters Thursday's matinee against the Chicago White Sox with a 1 1/2-game advantage for the AL's top wild-card spot.

Athletics place Sean Doolittle on 15-day DL with intercostal strain

The Oakland Athletics will have to endure a pennant race without their closer for at least the next two weeks.

Doolittle underwent an MRI on Sunday, but the results are still unknown. The lefty experienced a cramp-like pain in his right side on Saturday.

Manager Bob Melvin announced he will decide who throws in a high-leverage situation Sunday night vs. the Los Angeles Angels based on matchups, but did say he wants to designate a closer in Doolittle's stead.
