VIDEO: Blown call helps San Diego State get past New Mexico in OT

Troy Babbitt-USA TODAY Sports

San Diego State prevailed over New Mexico on Saturday following an overtime period that likely wouldn't have occurred if not for a massive referee blunder.

With 12 seconds left in regulation, the Lobos were up three points and inbounding the ball under their basket. Since the play occurred following a made basket by the Aztecs, New Mexico was allowed to run the baseline.

Lobos coach Craig Neal called for the player inbounding the ball to pass to a teammate who was also out of bounds, which is legal provided the player receiving the pass establishes one foot behind the boundary.

The officials ruled that Xavier Adams - the Lobo receiving the pass from Cullen Neal - didn't establish himself out of bounds, despite video showing he clearly did. San Diego State quickly converted a three following the turnover to force overtime, which they dominated to post a dramatic 78-71 win.

The Mountain West Conference promptly released a statement admitting fault on the officials.

"While this was a very close judgment call made at full speed, it has been determined after careful review of slow-motion replays the call was in fact incorrect," the conference said in a statement. "The New Mexico player did get one foot down (two foot are not required) out out-of-bounds before receiving the ball, thus establishing his location in accordance NCAA Basketball Playing Rules 4.23.1.a and 7.1.1. By rule, the officials were not permitted to go to the monitor during the game to review this play."

As one would expect, Neal was none too pleased with the blown ruling.

"We've practiced that play 100 times," the coach told ESPN's Andy Katz. "My kids were demoralized in overtime. If we beat San Diego State we are 8-2 and get them back at home. That call could cost me a conference championship."

A win would've placed the Lobos one game behind the Aztecs in the conference standings, with the teams scheduled to meet at New Mexico's famed arena "The Pit" later this season.
