UNLV's Ben Carter out for season with torn ACL

UNLV forward Ben Carter will miss the remainder of his junior season with a torn ACL in his left knee, the school confirmed Monday evening.

Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports initially reported Monday afternoon that the Rebels believed Carter had suffered the dreaded ACL tear.

"We are very disappointed for Ben," interim coach Todd Simon said in a statement. "He was obviously an impact player for us, but more than that he is a pillar of our program with his toughness, spirit, and leadership. It is a huge loss for our team."

Carter left Saturday's contest against San Diego State with what the Rebels initially called a left knee sprain, before he underwent further tests.

A Las Vegas native, Carter averaged 8.6 points and six rebounds in 24 minutes per game in his first campaign with the Rebels. The 6-foot-9 forward started his NCAA career with Oregon, but transferred following his 2013-14 freshman campaign.

The loss of Carter is another stumbling block in what has been a rough year for UNLV. The Rebels changed coaches three weeks ago after a subpar start to the season, and will ride a disappointing 13-9 record into Tuesday's affair with New Mexico.
