Jim Boeheim to appeal 9-game ACC suspension on basis of SMU ruling

Mark L. Baer / USA TODAY Sports

Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim will use Larry Brown's suspension as grounds to appeal his nine-game ACC ban, according to ESPN's Andy Katz.

Boeheim's argument will be that he's being forced to miss nine conference games, while the SMU head coach is suspended for the first nine games of the season.

The NCAA decision allows Brown to be on the bench as soon as conference play starts, given it doesn't begin until late December.

Boeheim's suspension stems from a lengthy eight-year investigation into the program, though he's expected to make his case that Syracuse tried to create an atmosphere of compliance.

Syracuse self-imposed a one-year postseason ban for the 2015 tournaments, while SMU was slapped with a 2016 postseason ban.
