SMU's Larry Brown facing 'lack of coach control' charge from NCAA

SMU men's basketball coach Larry Brown is facing a "lack of coach control" charge from the NCAA, the university confirmed Thursday in an interview with Brad Townsend of The Dallas Morning News. SMU is also facing an academic misconduct charge related to coursework of former guard Keith Frazier.

The news was first reported by Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports.

Forde reports university representatives appeared before the NCAA Committee on Infractions in June in a multi-day hearing to address serious allegations against the men's basketball and golf programs. The first day focused on the golf allegations, and the second day focused on men's basketball.

Brown has faced major NCAA charges in previous stints at UCLA and Kansas, resulting in both programs being hit with major sanctions.

The main issue at hand is the role of former assistant coach and basketball secretary Ulric Maligi, who is accused of assisting Frazier with coursework. Frazier played at SMU during the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons before being deemed "academically ineligible" in January 2015. His status for 2015-16 is unclear.

Maligi took an indefinite leave from the program in January 2015.

The concern with Brown is how much he knew about the Frazier situation, and what, if anything, he did about it.

Brown has compiled a 69-34 record in three seasons at SMU, guiding the Mustangs to the NCAA tournament this past season for the first time since 1993.
