Wisconsin's Bo Ryan will retire after 2015-16 season

Robert Hanashiro-USA TODAY Sports

The 2015-16 season will be the last for Bo Ryan as head men's basketball coach at Wisconsin, he announced in a statement Monday.

Back in the spring, in the days after the national championship game, (UW Director of Athletics) Barry Alvarez and I discussed the possibility of me retiring. I've always been told that is not a decision to make right after a season is completed. Barry thankfully encouraged me to take some time to think about it and I have done that. I considered retiring this summer or coaching one more season.

I've decided to coach one more season with the hope that my longtime assistant Greg Gard eventually becomes the head coach at Wisconsin. I am looking forward to another year with our program, including our players, my terrific assistant coaches, our office staff and everyone who supports Wisconsin basketball here in Madison, around the state and across the country.

This past season, Wisconsin fell to Duke in the national title game, the first Ryan coached at the Division I level, and the first title game appearance for the program since 1941. For the Badgers, it was their second consecutive Final Four appearance.

In 14 seasons with the Badgers, Ryan has compiled a 357-125 record, winning four Big Ten regular season championships, and reaching the NCAA tournament in each of those 14 seasons.

Prior to arriving in Madison, the 67-year-old Ryan spent two seasons at Milwaukee, and guided Wisconsin-Platteville to four Division III national championships in 15 seasons with the Pioneers.
