Notre Dame upsets No. 4 Duke

Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports

Notre Dame would not allow Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski to add to his 1,000 wins.

The No. 8 Fighting Irish defeated the No. 4 Blue Devils 77-73 on Wednesday.

The Irish got the most out of its guards beyond the perimeter, led by Jerian Grant, who finished with 23 points with 12 assists and 6 rebounds. His pass to guard Steve Vasturia, who nailed a 3-pointer with :28 left, virtually secured the win.

This game. This effin game.

Grant, a senior, made a number of huge shots on the night, but none any bigger than the late layup he hit to give his team a 67-65 lead, capping off a 10-0 run.

Duke's star freshman center Jahlil Okafor kept his team in it late, nailing the next two layups to regain the lead. He finished with 22 points, 17 rebounds and a block. Guard Quinn Cook scored 15 points with three 3-pointers.

Still, the effort from the Blue Devils couldn't drown out the Irish who shot 51.8 percent from the field and nailed eight 3-pointers.

Irish guard Pat Connaughton took a nasty spill - landing on his head - early in the second half but returned to the game. He finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds and 2 steals.

Pat Connaughton's head bounces off the hardwood. Ouch.

The loss brings Duke to 17-3, while Notre Dame increases its record to 20-2.
