Coming off their surprising run to the Elite Eight last season, Dayton's 2014-15 season isn't off to an ideal start.

The school announced Friday freshman center Steve McElvene will not be able to play this season after being ruled a partial qualifier (meaning he didn't meet all academic requirements) by the NCAA.

McElvene will retain four years of eligibility, which begin next season, and can still practice with the team this season.

"We are disappointed for Steve, and of course Steve is very disappointed," head coach Archie Miller said in a team statement. "But as a member of our team he will be involved in everything we do. This is a great opportunity for him to spend the next year to develop on and off the court to be the best player he can be at the start of next season, and prepare himself for a very successful college career."

The seven-foot McElvene was Honorable Mention All-Indiana in his senior year at New Haven High School last season.
