Report: Coppin State to hire Juan Dixon as head coach
Success as a player doesn't always translate into success as a coach, but Coppin State appears to be betting on its latest hire becoming an exception to that rule.
The school has reportedly hired former national champion and ACC Player of the Year Juan Dixon as its next head coach, according to Don Markus of the Baltimore Sun, citing sources.
Dixon takes over after spending last season as head coach of the women's basketball team at the University of the District of Columbia. Prior to that stint, Dixon spent three seasons at Maryland, his alma mater, serving as an assistant from 2013-15.
The 38-year-old is best known in the college ranks for leading the Terrapins to a national championship in 2002, earning NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player and ACC Player of the Year honors in the process.
His performance in college led to him being selected 17th overall in the 2002 NBA Draft by the Washington Wizards. He had subsequent stints with the Portland Trail Blazers, Toronto Raptors, and Detroit Pistons before returning to Washington to round out his seven-year NBA career.
