North Carolina lawmakers reach HB2 agreement before NCAA deadline

Brian Spurlock-US PRESSWIRE / Reuters

North Carolina Republican lawmakers announced late Wednesday night that they have an agreement with Governor Roy Cooper over repealing the HB2 law, just hours before the NCAA deadline.

The NCAA was among a number of sporting organizations, including the NBA, to pull events out of the state due to the controversial House Bill 2 law that blocks expansion of LGBT rights and requires transgender people to use the bathroom corresponding to the sex listed on their birth certificate.

The NBA moved February's All-star game from Charlotte to New Orleans, while the NCAA moved both the ACC football championship game and the first two rounds of the men's basketball tournament out of the state.

The NCAA threatened to pull more scheduled events out of the state if changes weren't made to the law.

While the new legislation will be debated and voted on Thursday, it's unclear what details are written up in the agreement.
