Rock-on: Oregon's Bell attributes shot-blocking skill to Guitar Hero

Jay Biggerstaff-USA TODAY Sports

Oregon's Jordan Bell was a one-man wrecking crew in the Ducks' Elite Eight win over Kansas this weekend, as the standout senior tied a career high with eight blocked shots.

While Bell credits his football background as a defensive end for his prowess at stopping opponents, his ability to block shots comes from a very unique place.

"That came from Guitar Hero," Bell told Henry Bushell of Yahoo Sports, referencing the popular video game. "In Guitar Hero, you have to press and strum at the same time. It's all about timing."

As any accomplished shot-blocker will tell you, the most important aspect of their craft is proper timing. There's plenty of tall, athletic big men waiting to swat any potential basket, but improper timing leads to fouls, which leads to a lengthy spell on the bench.

As impressive as Bell's eight blocks were, the fact he only registered one foul throughout the entire game is just as noteworthy. On an Oregon team lacking depth in the frontcourt thanks to Chris Boucher's season-ending injury, Bell's timing on defense is absolutely crucial.

If he plays Guitar Hero half as well as he blocks shots, students around the Oregon campus might want to avoid engaging him in a 1-on-1 battle at any parties anytime soon.
