Report: Texas' Smart to face former school VCU in home-and-home series

Danny La-USA TODAY Sports

Shaka Smart will return to VCU this season, as the Rams and Texas have scheduled a home-and-home series over the next two years, sources told Jon Rothstein of Fan Rag Sports.

VCU will host its former coach and his new program in December with the return date in Austin to happen during the 2018-19 season.

The home-and-home series was agreed upon as part of the buyout in Smart's contract that saw him take the Texas job in 2015. The 39-year-old was VCU head coach from 2009-15, compiling an incredible 163-56 record, including a Final Four appearance in 2011.

The man on the other sideline in December will be a very familiar face for Smart, as VCU hired Mike Rhoades last week to replace Will Wade after he took the LSU head coaching position. Rhoades was Smart's top assistant on the Rams' Final Four team in 2011.
