Supposedly inferior SEC puts 3 teams in Elite Eight

Jim Brown / USA TODAY Sports

Friday night began with South Carolina fans chanting "SEC, SEC, SEC" inside Madison Square Garden as the first team from its conference booked a spot in the Elite Eight.

By the time it ended, Kentucky and Florida had joined the Gamecocks, giving the SEC three teams in the Elite Eight for the first time since 1986. Moreover, the SEC is the lone conference that'll be represented by multiple teams in the next round.

The SEC was believed by many to be the inferior power conference throughout the season, but South Carolina, Kentucky, and Florida are helping the league flex its muscles in March.

For good measure, the Gators and Gamecocks are set to meet in the Elite Eight, meaning at least one SEC team is guaranteed to play in the Final Four.
