Texas' Allen declares for NBA draft, won't sign with agent

Texas forward Jarrett Allen will test the NBA waters, as the freshman declared for the NBA draft on Tuesday.

"I want everyone to know that I am testing the waters with this decision, but I will not be signing with an agent," Allen said in a statement. "Going through this process will allow my family and I to make the best decision possible for my future.

"I had a fantastic year personally here at Texas. I had fun and learned so much. I learned that things are going to be tougher than you think, but you have to learn how to respond to adversity. And I've matured a lot as a person."

Should Allen ultimately turn pro, though, Texas head coach Shaka Smart will need to replace a key member of his starting lineup on a team that finished dead last in the Big 12 this season. The Longhorns posted an 11-22 overall record while managing a lackluster 4-14 mark in conference play.

Aside from former Texas guard Tevin Mack, who was removed from the team on Feb. 27, Allen finished the season as both the Longhorns' leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 13.4 points and 8.4 boards along with 1.5 blocks in 33 games.
