Lonzo Ball vs. Allonzo Trier was a glorious heavyweight bout

Casey Sapio-USA TODAY Sports

If the Pac-12 matchup between No. 4 Arizona and No. 5 UCLA was the main event for Saturday, the undercard of Allonzo Trier vs. Lonzo Ball certainly lived up to a heavyweight billing.

The battle between the explosive guards never failed to disappoint, with both players turning in elite-level performances in the contest.

First up, representing the winning Bruins outfit, was Ball, who flashed the all-around point guard skills that have NBA scouts drooling over his professional prospects.

Player Points Assists Rebounds
Lonzo Ball 11 8 5

A very tidy stat-line of 11 points, eight assists, and five rebounds will get the headlines, but his ability to control a game with subtle movements was the difference for the Bruins. The knock on Ball has been his unorthodox shooting style, but he showed yet again that he's perfected the stroke, and it should not be questioned going forward.

While Trier's Wildcats came up short in their first home loss of the season, the sophomore standout was a beast all night, providing Arizona with its main source of offense throughout.

Player Points Field goals Rebounds
Allonzo Trier 28 11-14 5

His 28 points jump off the page, with that total coming on an extremely efficient 11-of-14 shooting from the field. A perfect 3-for-3 from the foul line, Trier only missed three total shots all night, all coming from beyond the 3-point arc.

The 6-foot-5, 205-pounder was a menace going to the basket all game, dominating the transition game with incredible moves at high speed.

It wasn't just the open court where Trier thrived, as he took on Ball and half the Bruins team on one particular drive in the half court set, finishing with an acrobatic layup.

The win will surely put UCLA ahead of Arizona in the next AP top-25 rankings, but the major takeaway from Saturday is that Trier and Ball should be among the first names mentioned in any conversation about the nation's best player.
