Legendary coaching matchups dominate the Wednesday schedule

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Wednesday is a massive night on the college hoops calendar, with two games featuring arguably the best coaching matchups of all time.

Syracuse hosts Duke in a contest pitting Jim Boeheim and Mike Krzyzewski against one another; the first time in history that two coaches with over 1,000 career wins are meeting.

The second half of the ESPN doubleheader certainly is no slouch either, as North Carolina and Roy Williams host Rick Pitino and Louisville.

The numbers of the four legendary coaches compared to the rest of Division I are staggering, and it raises the question as to what college basketball will look like when these men retire.

Pitino is the youngster of the bunch at age 64, followed by the 66-year-old Williams, the 70-year-old Krzyzewski and the 72-year-old Boeheim.

Only the Syracuse coach has a targeted retirement date, with Boeheim slated to step away following next season. Whether he follows through on that date remains to be seen, but the college basketball world should savor these matchups, because it's unclear how many are left for these legends.
