Football is done, so get caught up on the college hoops season

Clemson's thrilling victory over Alabama on Monday didn't just mean the Tigers were national champions - it also meant football season is officially over.

For some of us, that means full attention in college sports can turn to hoops, despite the fact basketball season has been underway since early November.

Here's what you've missed if you are just jumping on board now.

Big-name programs back on top

The current top 10 is littered with big-name programs. Kansas, Villanova, UCLA, Gonzaga, Kentucky, Duke, and West Virginia all find themselves among the best in the country. Those seven teams sport a combined record of 104-10 on the season, and appear to be the cream of the crop once again.

The defending champion Wildcats have looked just as sharp this year, with Josh Hart emerging as a national player of the year candidate. Kentucky once again is led by super-talented freshmen, West Virginia presses the heck out of you, and Gonzaga is the lone undefeated team left in the country.

Diaper dandies dominate

With a load of first-year studs coming into college hoops this season, many expected 2016-17 to the the year of the freshman. That's proved to be true and then some, as the players Dick Vitale calls "diaper dandies" have ruled the sport thus far. Lonzo Ball and T.J Leaf have UCLA rolling again, and Kansas' Josh Jackson is doing things like this on a nightly basis.

Kentucky and Duke are once again full of five-star phenoms, although the Blue Devils' freshman quartet of Harry Giles, Jayson Tatum, Frank Jackson, and Marques Bolden has been slowed by injury. That hasn't been the case for Kentucky's De'Aaron Fox, Malik Monk, and Bam Adebayo. Monk put forth the best individual performance of the season thus far, dropping an incredible 47 points against North Carolina, including the game-winner from beyond the arc.

Dramatics follow Duke

Like most seasons, Duke is in the headlines yet again, although it's not all positive for the Blue Devils. After landing four of the top 20 freshmen in the country and bringing back stars Luke Kennard and Grayson Allen, many figured Duke would breeze through the ACC. The man at the center of the controversy is Allen, who was suspended for a game after tripping an opponent during a game against Elon. Shortly after he came back, there was a shoving incident with a Florida State assistant, though the coach dismissed it.

Legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski is on the shelf for at least four weeks after back surgery, and Duke has dropped two of its first four ACC games. Though it may seem like the Blue Devils are reeling, they're still firmly in the top 10 with only three losses. Regardless of how the season ends, it will be a dramatic one for arguably the top program in the country.

Who are those guys?

While many of the top teams are the traditional powers, there are a few less recognizable names among the upper echelon. Baylor currently holds the No. 1 ranking in the country, although that's likely to change after a loss to West Virginia. It's not as though the Bears have played a weak schedule either - they've already beaten Oregon, Michigan State, Louisville, Iowa State, and Xavier this season.

Creighton and Florida State also find themselves in the top 10, which isn't something that happens on a yearly basis. Creighton basketball is usually associated with its high-scoring products in the NBA, Kyle Korver and Doug McDermott, while Florida State is thought of as a football school. The Bluejays own the nation's 11th-ranked scoring attack, led by star point guard Maurice Watson Jr., the nation's leader in assists. The Seminoles are also a high-scoring outfit, ranking 13th in the country, and are absolutely loaded with NBA talent like Dwayne Bacon and Jonathan Isaac.
