Arizona State's Hurley rips team for poor showing in Jimmy V Classic

The annual Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden is one of the best nights on the college basketball calendar, putting teams together for a great cause.

The game serves as a massive fundraiser for the Jimmy V cancer foundation, named in honor of legendary NC State frontman Jimmy Valvano. His speech at the 1993 ESPY Awards highlighted his passion for life and the great courage he showed while fighting the disease. Sadly, he would die shortly after the speech.

Arizona State got throttled 97-64 by No. 18 Purdue in the early game on Tuesday, and head coach Bobby Hurley ripped into his players following the contest.

"It's unfortunate that our team didn't even come close to the energy that Jimmy (Valvano) had in his life and his passion," Hurley told the Associated Press after the game. "We had no passion for playing. We did a disservice to this game and this event and what he represented."

Hurley wasn't done there, as he referenced the lack of effort on the legendary floor at Madison Square Garden, and the lack of work ethic in a city such as New York.

"For a city that's a blue-collar city and an arena that has so much tradition and so many good players that have played on this court, to look like that it was embarrassing," Hurley said, as per Adam Zagoria of ZagsBlog. "And then the cause, such a great cause that we're playing for tonight. Did my players play as hard as the people that are going through what they go through in cancer, as families go through their personal situations? I don't think so."

The Sun Devils' next game is Saturday against San Diego State, and after Hurley's comments Tuesday, it will likely be a fired-up group that takes the floor.
