George Washington names Maurice Joseph interim coach

Brad Mills / USA TODAY Sports

George Washington announced Tuesday that assistant Maurice Joseph will serve as interim head coach for the 2016-17 season.

"MoJo emerged as the right individual for this interim position," school provost Forrest Maltzman said in a news release. "He's a strong teacher and he has the full support of the university. MoJo will be an excellent mentor for the young men he will lead with his understanding of the ideals of what a student-athlete should be, and he will prioritize a united locker room to achieve the program’s common goals."

The Colonials have been without a coach since firing Mike Lonergan 10 days ago amid a probe into alleged verbal and emotional abuse of players.

George Washington posted a 28-10 record last year and won the NIT tournament to finish the season.
