Oklahoma AD declares Big 12 expansion dead

One of the hotly debated offseason topics appears to be done, as Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione told CBS Sports' Dennis Dodd that Big 12 expansion is dead "for the time being."

The league announced it would begin holding a conference championship game starting in 2017, a move most thought would lead directly to the addition of two schools to bring the total number to 12. Castiglione's comments Wednesday show that doesn't appear to be the case.

"There aren't any signs that we'll talk anymore about expansion for a little while," he admitted. "We don't have a timeline on it."

The presidents and chancellors of the 10 schools will meet July 19, where it's expected expansion will be one of the topics discussed. While Castiglione had declared those talks dead, conference commissioner Bob Bowlsby wouldn't go that far.

"I don't know where we're at," the 64-year-old said. "I know we haven't brought it to a conclusion. That conclusion may very well be status quo. Until we get together and the chancellors and presidents make it a decision, I consider it a pending issue."

Whether expansion talks are officially dead or not, it looks as though nothing firm will be decided before the meeting in a couple weeks' time.
