SEC apologizes after hacked Twitter account tweets inappropriate photos

The NFL isn't alone when it comes to experiencing Twitter-related headaches, as the SEC found it didn't have control of its Twitter account Saturday morning.

The SEC account was hacked around 10:30 a.m. ET and sent out a series of tweets that contained inappropriate photos and links encouraging users to visit pornographic websites.

The SEC responded to the hack by apologizing, removing the offending tweets, and issuing a statement on the situation.

We became aware of it when we saw some retweets. The images were removed immediately, our password changed and we notified Twitter. We will, of course, continue to monitor the account closely today.

SEC communications director Chuck Dunlap also commented on the incident on his personal Twitter account.

Earlier this month, the NFL's official Twitter account was hacked and tweeted that commissioner Roger Goodell had died before the league was able to regain control. It was yet another example of how vulnerable these accounts can be to potential attackers.
