Southampton appears to have ramped up its efforts to retain Jay Rodriguez long term.
The 24-year-old is a proven striker, but an extension will include a caveat; he won't be in form until October after suffering a torn ACL last April.
Despite the associated risk of his injury, the Saints' confidence in his recovery may keep Rodriguez in stripes. The reported five-year offer may be enough to fend off Liverpool, who are believed to have interest in bolstering its forward position with the Burnley native.
Rodriguez still has two years remaining on his current deal.
