Colorado Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov will be in goal Friday against the Vancouver Canucks, head coach Patrick Roy confirmed Thursday.

Roy told reporters Varlamov will play Friday, three days after the coach said the starter would be "ready to go" for the game.

Varlamov has missed three games with a groin injury. He was placed on injured reserve last Thursday.

Oct 20, 2:42 PM

The Colorado Avalanche's goaltending injury woes appear to be coming to an end, at least in regards to starter Semyon Varlamov.

Head coach Patrick Roy announced Monday that Varlamov will be "ready to go" for Friday's game against the Vancouver Canucks.

The Vezina Trophy finalist missed the past two games with a groin injury, and will be looking to bounce back after a rough start that saw him post a .910 save percentage while failing to record a win in three starts.

Avalanche coach: Varlamov could have played Thursday if it was a playoff game

Oct 17, 3:02 PM

The nature and timing of goalie Semyon Varlamov's injury have afforded the Colorado Avalanche the ability to be extra cautious.

Head coach Patrick Roy indicated Friday that Varlamov could have played Thursday in Ottawa had it been a playoff game, according to Mike Chambers of the Denver Post.

Instead, he was placed on injured reserve with a groin injury and will be out for at least two more games. An injury to backup Reto Berra means Roy may have to lean on two AHL goalies in the meantime.

Report: Avalanche expect Varlamov to miss 2 more games

Oct 17, 9:40 AM

The Colorado Avalanche expect goaltender Semyon Varlamov to be back in the lineup for a game against the Vancouver Canucks on Oct. 24, according to Mike Chambers of the Denver Post.

Varlamov was placed on injured reserve before Colorado's 5-3 loss to the Ottawa Senators on Thursday. Reto Berra got the start in net, but was quickly replaced by call-up Calvin Pickard after suffering an injury of his own.

Varlamov appears set to miss three games overall, but groin injuries tend to be tricky and there's no guarantee it will be fully healed in time.

Varlamov has struggled out of the gate this year after being a Vezina Trophy finalist last season. He posted a save percentage of .910 while failing to record a win in three starts.

Avalanche place Semyon Varlamov on injured reserve with groin injury

Oct 16, 5:38 PM

Colorado Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov has been placed on injured reserve, the team announced Thursday.

Varlamov was a game-time decision due to a groin injury that was more serious than initially thought.

Reto Berra will start against the Ottawa Senators on Thursday.

Goaltender Calvin Pickard has been recalled from Lake Erie to take Varlamov's spot on the roster.

Avalanche's Varlamov to be placed on IR if unable to play Thursday vs. Senators

Oct 16, 3:47 PM

While Colorado Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov remains a game-time decision for Thursday's match against the Ottawa Senators, there are signs that his groin issue may be more serious than first thought.

For one thing, the Avalanche website already lists Varlamov as being on injured reserve. But Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports that the roster move isn't official yet.

So either Varlamov plays against the Senators, or he goes on injured reserve and misses more than one game.

Due to the sensitive nature of groin injuries, don't be surprised if it's the latter and Reto Berra gets the call in Ottawa.

Avalanche's Varlamov questionable for Thursday's game vs. Senators

Oct 16, 12:48 PM

The Colorado Avalanche may be without top goaltender Semyon Varlamov for Thursday's game against the Ottawa Senators, says head coach Patrick Roy.

The 2014 Vezina Trophy finalist struggled out of the gate this season, posting a save percentage of .910 while failing to record a win in three starts.

If he's unable to play, backup Reto Berra will likely get the start for Colorado.
