NBA Draft Profile: Scott Machado

Scott Machado – PG – 6’1, 180lbs.
Iona

Queens’ native Scott Machado has drawn inspiration from Jeremy Lin. He picked a good role model. At 6’1, 180lbs Machado will need do what Lin and a select few have done in recent years – play bigger than his size. Machado was terrific at Iona, averaging a nation high 9.9 assists per game and 1.9 steals. His outside shooting, a weakness in his junior year, improved considerably in his final season at the New York based college.

Machado doesn’t have the speed and quickness needed to excel at his size. He’ll also have trouble guarding NBA point guards that are bigger and stronger than him – which is pretty much everybody at this point. However, we’ve heard this before. Like Lin, Machado’s ability to lead an offence and make players around him better could see him taken late in the first round.

ESPN’s Chad Ford writes about Machado that “He's the best point guard no one knows about. He gave Maryland and St. Joseph's all they could handle this season. Given the dearth of point guards in the draft, I'm sure scouts would have loved to look at him a little longer in the NCAA tournament.”
