Wes Matthews twists knee on frightening landing, remains in game

Tim Heitman / USA TODAY Sports

Everyone in American Airlines Arena held their breath in the fourth quarter Friday night, after Dallas Mavericks shooting guard Wesley Matthews landed awkwardly on a drive to the hoop against the Golden State Warriors and went down in a heap.

Things didn't look much rosier with the benefit of replay, which showed Matthews' right leg twisting in queasy fashion.

Matthews - who had his season cut short last year around this time by a ruptured Achilles' tendon suffered on a similar non-contact play - helped a lot of people breathe easier when he managed to get up and walk off the court under his own power.

Before he did, Mavericks and Warriors alike supported each other in a moment of uncertainty and concern for their peer.

Ugly as the fall looked, Matthews ended up staying in the game, gutting it out and finishing with 32 minutes, second to only Dirk Nowitzki among Dallas players.

The Warriors won, 130-112.
