Report: 3 teams join front-running Spurs in pursuing Kevin Martin

Brett Davis / USA TODAY Sports

The market for recently bought-out Minnesota Timberwolves shooting guard Kevin Martin is starting to heat up.

While San Antonio has long been considered the favorite to sign Martin, whose former Wolves teammate Andre Miller joined the Spurs after being bought out by Minnesota last week, at least three other likely playoff teams are reportedly in pursuit.

The Atlanta Hawks, Dallas Mavericks, and Houston Rockets are all hoping to scoop up the 33-year-old when he clears waivers later this week, according to ESPN's Marc Stein.

Martin was waived just ahead of the March 1 deadline, making him eligible to be part of another team's postseason roster. He said before the trade deadline last month that he hoped to be dealt to a winning team, which may rule out the scuffling Rockets, who are barely clinging to a playoff spot at 29-31.

Martin saw his minutes slashed in Minnesota to 21.4 per game, his fewest since his rookie season in 2004-05. He struggled shooting the ball, too, hitting a career-low 37.7 percent of his field goals. A year after averaging a team-leading 20 points, Martin is down to 10.6, with a true shooting percentage (52.3) and PER (12.2) that are both decade-long lows.

Still, Martin remains a strong 3-point shooter (36.9 percent) who continues to get to the free-throw line at one of the NBA's highest rates. He's a capable offensive player who could give a playoff team an added scoring punch off the bench.
