Cavs' Mo Williams expected to be out at least 2 more weeks

Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Mo Williams has missed the last three games and six of the past seven, and now it appears he'll be sidelined another two weeks at least.

The 33-year-old has been dealing with left knee soreness caused by inflammation in the cartilage under the kneecap. After receiving a second opinion from renowned surgeon Dr. James Andrews last week, Williams will hold off on a return to the court in favor of additional treatment and rest.

"As of right now we just know he's going to be out for a couple of weeks, getting treatment," Cavs head coach Tyronn Lue said Monday night, according to Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com. "We will re-evaluate in a couple of weeks."

After a torrid start to the season in the absence of Kyrie Irving, Williams slowed considerably, losing minutes to both Irving (after his return from offseason knee surgery) and backup Matthew Dellavedova.

His struggles could be chalked up in part to injuries - he dealt with an ankle sprain and played through a torn thumb ligament in his shooting hand - but even when seemingly healthy, he's received several DNP-CDs.

Through November, Williams was averaging 14.7 points and 4.6 assists in 30.3 minutes, while shooting 49.7 percent from the field and 35 percent from beyond the arc. Since then, he's averaging five points and 1.3 assists in 12.7 minutes, shooting 35.9 percent from the field and 26.7 percent from deep.

With both Irving and Dellavedova healthy and capably holding down the point guard position, the Cavs can afford to let Williams heal for as long as he needs, and hope the additional rest allows him to come back the player he was at the start of the year.
