Joe Johnson: Waived by Nets

Johnson was officially waived by the Nets on Thursday, Mike Mazzeo of ESPN.com reports.

Analysis:

Johnson and the Nets engaged in buyout negations earlier in the day and quickly agreed to part ways. The 34-year-old had been the second-highest paid player in the league this season, but now that he's a free agent, he'll attract the attention of several teams looking to add some wing depth heading into the playoffs. Since Johnson has been waived prior to the March 1 deadline, he will be eligible to play in the postseason when he signs with a contender. Johnson's scoring has plummeted for the fourth straight season, as he's averaging just 11.8 points on 40.6 percent shooting over 57 games with the Nets, but his efficiency could rise if he lands with a team where he can settle in as a fourth or fifth option offensively. He'll officially clear waivers at 5 p.m. Saturday, after which he can parse through offers from his many suitors.
