Joe Johnson officially joins Heat

The Miami Heat have officially added Joe Johnson. Team owner Micky Arison tweeted his welcome to the 34-year-old swingman Saturday after Johnson cleared waivers.

Johnson was a hot commodity among contenders after being waived by the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday. The 15-year NBA veteran has a career postseason scoring average of 17.3 points and was shooting 37.1 percent from 3-point territory with Brooklyn this season.

With the Heat banged up and Chris Bosh's status going forward unclear, the addition should help Miami. Johnson has played power forward minutes in the past, notably in stretches during the 2014 playoffs against the Toronto Raptors.

Dwyane Wade said Saturday that he pushed Johnson hard to join the Heat, telling reporters: "I made sure he saw my name in his inbox a lot."

The Cleveland Cavaliers and Raptors were also known to be interested in Johnson's services. He gave up about $3 million of his near $25-million salary this season in taking the buyout from the Nets.
