Report: Grizzlies waive Russ Smith, sign Ryan Hollins

Justin Ford-USA TODAY Sports

The Memphis Grizzlies are waiving point guard Russ Smith, according to Yahoo Sports' Shams Charania.

In his place, the team will sign center Ryan Hollins.

Hollins suited up for the Grizzlies during the preseason, averaging 5.4 points and three rebounds in seven outings before the team ultimately waived him to cut its roster down for the regular season.

He was eventually picked up by the Washington Wizards, playing five games under head coach Randy Wittman before being let go to make room for sharpshooter Jarell Eddie.

This will be the ninth team Hollins competes for since going 50th overall to the Charlotte Bobcats (now Hornets) in the 2006 NBA Draft.

Smith scored 23 points and grabbed five rebounds in his one and only game with the Iowa Energy in the D-League this season. He was buried on Memphis' depth chart, playing behind both Mike Conley and Mario Chalmers.

In 15 appearances with the Grizzlies, Smith averaged 1.5 points and 0.7 assists in 66 total minutes.
